How We Got Our Start

Updated: Dec 17, 2018

In early 2018, we were having coffee with a home inspector and happened to strike up a conversation about the future of the industry. As we got further into the conversation we realized that there were some great opportunities to improve upon the status quo of reporting software that existed. In fact, the home inspector that we were speaking to had mentioned that he would have ideally wanted to work on his own software solution after years of using one of the most popular packages out there, noting its deficiencies and room for improvement.

Many of the software tools out there for home inspectors have been around for 15+ years, with minimal effort applied to improvements, especially when it came to how the inspection report is then shown to a home inspector’s clients. This wasn’t necessarily a bad thing (see: ‘If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.’), but could prove to be disastrous for folks if/when certain technologies start to become obsolete. When was the last time you saw a laptop with a CD drive?

From that point on, we decided on developing our inspection software on a few important foundational rules:

  • Eneris would be easy enough to use and understand without the need for outside training, because powerful tools don’t have to be complicated to operate if they’ve been designed well.

  • Eneris would use advanced technologies such as Artificial Intelligence to attempt to make life easier and site-time shorter for home inspectors. In 2018, we can go out and buy cars that can pretty much drive themselves, so why shouldn’t we use all the tools available to us today to make better software? There’s always room for improvement.

  • Eneris would look and work the same across any device, whether it’s a computer, tablet, or smartphone. Back in the early 2000s when a lot of the current software packages were created, smartphones and tablets weren’t in our vocabulary, which led to companion apps being built as an afterthought. Back then, home inspection software was all about the desktop, but this is no longer the case today.

As we already had multiple years of prior expertise in both software and mechanical engineering, working with multiple home inspectors and realtors within our personal circle of family and friends allowed for us to both develop new and innovative solutions. Throughout the journey, we’ve tried to live in the shoes of the home inspectors in the Vancouver area as much as possible, and never plan to stop learning from the feedback we get!
